About 100% Grass Fed

Why did Munchkin decide to launch a 100% grass fed formula?

We want the best for our little ones.

And when it comes to baby formula, we just weren't satisfied with today's options. We needed to find the best milk. Why? The majority of infant formula is milk or milk by-products – approximately 65% to be exact. We searched high and low for the most natural, nutritious milk and found it in New Zealand. There, cows spend their days roaming green pastures, instead of being stressed out in overcrowded feedlots or inside factory farms on concrete floors – eating an unnatural diet of grain. Somewhere along the way, profit got in the way of what nature intended.

We decided it was time for a change so we created a new standard, 100% grass fed milk. Milk that we pass on to your baby through our formula. We believe it’s worth it. Visit A New Standard to learn more.

Why does milk matter?

Milk matters because it is the key ingredient in formula, but not all milk is created equal. Milk or milk by-products make up to 65% of most formulas. We need to lift the veil on grain fed dairy which is focused on maximizing output and profit at the expense of milk quality and the cow’s health. Organic is a step above but still isn’t as healthy as we think. There has to be a better way.

We believe the best milk comes from 100% grass fed cows.

What is the benefit of 100% grass fed milk?

Infant Formula is made with up to 65% milk or milk by-products, so we feel it’s important that the milk in your formula is the best. Milk from 100% grass fed cows is flowing with Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Grass fed milk contains up to 5x more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), and has a more balanced ratio of Essential Fatty Acids when compared to milk from grain fed cows. Milk from cows who eat an unnatural diet of grains does not meet our standard. Visit A New Standard to learn more.

Why did you go to New Zealand?

New Zealand is one of the few places in the world with the ideal climate to raise 100% grass fed cows that graze year-round in beautiful pastures. Temperate weather, year-round grass, rainfall and rolling fields provide cows a healthy environment. Not only do our cows produce more nutritious milk, but they also live long, happy lives.

Don’t all cows live on pasture?

Don't be fooled with images of cows grazing in pastures on milk cartons. In the U.S., approximately 90% of cows live on crowded feedlots or on factory farms and never graze in grassy pastures.

We have nothing to hide. We’re happy to show you our farms and our cows, 365 days a year. Where does the milk in your formula come from? Visit The Source to learn more.

What do cows eat?

Cows are made to eat grass. Grass is their natural diet, but unfortunately the growth of factory farms has meant that very few cows in the U.S. and other countries graze on pasture the way nature intended.

Factory farms have prioritized profits over principles, feeding cows grains that they are not meant to process. For grain-fed cows, their diet includes corn and soy, which are difficult for cows to digest. This can cause them to get sick and need large doses of antibiotics.

We pay our farmers a premium to ensure that they are able to feed our cows grass and meet our 100% grass fed standard.

Do some cows eat Skittles?

Our 100% Grass Fed standard means that our cows eat only grass, the way nature intended. Some dairy farmers in the U.S. utilize fatty, sugary treats such as Skittles to “beef up” their cows, especially when corn prices are high and farmers seek an alternative way to keep the cows fed. Read more about these types of practices here.

Why should I pay the extra price for Grass Fed?

We’re proud to share that we pay our farmers a premium to adhere to our high standards for feeding cows grass only on their farms. And, since there is not a current grass fed standard, Munchkin created its own to ensure a top quality formula made with 100% grass fed milk. This rigorous standard translates to higher quality milk, which serves as the key ingredient in our formula. We know you'll agree that our little ones are worth it!

When you buy Grass Fed, you are paying for superior environmental stewardship, more humane treatment of cows, and financially sustainable support for more family farmers- all of which leads to the world's best milk! Visit A New Standard to learn more.

Is your formula organic?

We believe our 100% grass fed standard is a notch above organic. Our cows graze in pasture 365 days per year, while the USDA Organic Standard only requires that cows eat an ~10% grass diet. Check out the Buzz section of our site to see what others are saying about grass fed!

Our Farms

How do you ensure the quality of your milk?

We pay our farmers more for the milk, to ensure that they adhere strictly to our 100% grass fed standard. Our standard mandates that the cows have a natural diet of grass, graze in open pasture the way nature intended, and that our milk is free of growth hormones and antibiotics.

Are grass fed farms better for the environment?

The USDA recently published a study showing that yes, grass fed farming is better for the environment than farms in which cows are confined. On year-round grass fed farms, total greenhouse emissions, fuel use, sediment erosion, and phosphorus runoffs are lower than in confined systems. For our farms, they are on track to reduce their carbon footprints for decades to come.

In fact, more than half of our farms in New Zealand are part of the Synlait Lead with Pride program. This special certification means that they adhere to four key pillars that include Environmental Protection and Animal Welfare. As part of this certification process, they must show efficiency in water and irrigation management and exceed New Zealand’s already tough animal welfare standards.

What is Lead with Pride?

Our manufacturing partner has a unique certification program for farms that exceed New Zealand’s already tough dairy farming practices. Lead with Pride recognizes and financially rewards suppliers who achieve dairy farming best practice.

Certification is met across four key pillars: Environment, Animal Health & Welfare, Social Responsibility & Milk Quality. To achieve and sustain certification, farms must meet independent audits, that are verified independently by AsureQuality.

How many 100% grass fed farms does Munchkin have?

We currently have 26 farms with over 18,000 cows that meet our 100% grass fed standard. They are all within a 70 mile radius of where the formula is made. This allows the milk to be picked up daily from the farms, to ensure maximum freshness. Learn more about our farmers and their passion for Grass Fed at The Source.

Formula Ingredients

Why is it so important that the milk in your formula is GMO free?

A GMO—or Genetically Modified Organism—often refers to ingredients that have been altered by using gene-splicing techniques in order to introduce a desirable trait. As parents, it is important to us that the milk in our formula be GMO-free and we have set a strict standard to ensure that it is. Visit A New Standard to learn more.

Why is it so important that the milk in your formula is rBGH (or rBST) free?

rBGH is a genetically engineered growth hormone used to increase cows' milk production. You can rest assured that all of our grass fed cows are rBGH free because unlike in the U.S., growth hormones are illegal in New Zealand for all dairy animals. Visit A New Standard to learn more.

Why is it so important that the milk in your formula comes from Grain Free cows?

The more grass in a cow’s diet the higher the quality of the milk. According to the U.S. organic standards, cows can eat an unnatural mixture of grain and corn. The USDA Organic standard requires that cows only spend 120 days in pasture and during that time only 30% of their diet must come from grass.

Our milk is independently certified to come from 100% grass fed cows. Grass fed milk has an ideal balance of essential fatty acids and is flowing with Vitamin A and Vitamin E. It also has up to 5x more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) than milk from grain fed cows.

Is the milk in your formula antibiotic free?

Yes, the 100% grass fed milk in our formula is antibiotic free.

In the U.S., over 80% of all antibiotics are used to treat farm animals. This is due to unsanitary conditions, poor hygiene, and the use of growth hormones on factory farms and feedlots. Our 100% grass fed cows roam in open, rolling pastures 365 days per year. In fact, our oldest cow on our grass fed farms is 22 years old, while in contrast, dairy cows in the U.S. live only to 4-5 years on average. Natural, happy and healthy lifestyles for the cows mean less sickness and that antibiotic use is very limited. Rest easy that no antibiotics reach our formula, because every tank of milk from our farms is 100% tested to be antibiotic free.

Does your formula include antioxidants?

Yes, antioxidants help support a strong immune system, and are naturally occurring in breast milk.

Does your formula include Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and ARA?

Our formula includes DHA (hexane free) and ARA, which promote brain and eye development.

Does Grass Fed™ formula contain Palm Oil?

No, our formulas sold in U.S. do not contain Palm Oil. We are committed to sustainable practices, and the sourcing of Palm Oil is currently one of the leading causes of rainforest destruction.

Why does your formula contain Lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is found in breast milk and some studies show that it supports the immune system. Grass Fed is one of the first formulas to contain Lactoferrin.

Does your formula contain any sweetener?

While some formulas use cane sugar or other sweeteners, Grass Fed uses only lactose, a carbohydrate source that is naturally found in breast milk.

Is Grass Fed endorsed by doctors?

Why are there two stages of formula?

We offer 2 stages of formula to meet the needs of your baby from birth to 36 months of age. As the nutritional needs of your child change, so does our formula. Stage 1 is suited for babies 0-12 months and Stage 2 is suited for toddlers 1-3 years.

Why should I feed my child toddler milk drink after 12 months?

As parents, we know that toddlers are a picky bunch when it comes to food and we worry that they don't always get the nutrients they need. The key ingredient in our Stage 2 Grass Fed Toddler Milk Drink is milk or milk by-products. Our Grass Fed Toddler Milk is specially formulated with calcium, Vitamins A, E, C, B12, Niacin, and Iron to help support healthy growth and development.
